Sept 2025 update.

The Reset Local Plan Options document has now been published ahead of its consideration at the Cabinet meeting on 25th September. Subject to Cabinet approval, public consultation will run from 3rd October to 14th November.

We have been informed B&NES are seeking to engage a wider audience/demographic across the District in the Local Plan and place-shaping issues. This new approach will include a greater range and number of opportunities across the district than the ‘traditional’ drop-in events/exhibitions. There will be a mixture of opportunities, including drop-in events, but also pop-up events and a roadshow. The programme of events is still being finalised and is still subject to Cabinet approval on 25th September. Sessions will include significant opportunities across the Somer Valley area over a 2-3 day period. Further details will be sent out to parish councils and will be available on the dedicated Local Plan website at: https://bathnesplaces.co.uk

Links to the document are below.  When previewing the updated options document, you will notice text highlighted with a blue background. This represents the new additons to the document.  You are welcome to review the whole document or use your keyword search for the word ‘Farrington‘ to review all areas that could affect us too, e.g. Farrington Road Paulton.

There are again 2 options for Farrington Gurney:

  1. 400 – 500 homes south of the village, requiring a new primary school and crossings
  2. 50 homes that is being proposed by our local plan. (you will not see a much detail e.g. drawings as this is work in progress)

The Reset Local Plan Options document was due to be considered by Cabinet on 11th September, and the Cabinet Report and Options document was therefore due to be published on 3rd September. Please note this has now changed, and the Reset Local Plan Options document will now be considered by Cabinet at a special meeting on 25th September at 4.30 p.m. This means that the Cabinet Report and Options document will be published on 17th September.

Public consultation on the Reset Local Plan Options document will still take place from 2nd October to 13th November – this has not changed. Information on the consultation will be set out in the communications and engagement plan that will be attached to the Cabinet Report published on 17th September.

We have an excellent relationship with B&NES planning team, having regular meetings and correspondence to help shape our vision for the local plan.  It’s clear B&NES is under huge
pressure from central government to build, build, build. What that means for us is that,
during our latest meeting, council officers announced that the option of 500 houses for our
village must remain an option. This came as a surprise to us and to the B&NES planning
team. The draft local plan is due for public consumption towards the end of the summer, with another round of consultations in the autumn. We know this option is unpopular. For
that reason, we are ploughing ahead with our Neighbourhood Plan in the hope that it will
prove a source of influence over the long period of time over which planning will be
discussed and agreed.

For this reason, we have asked for volunteers to help us draft the principles for development
in the village. This will likely take place in September. We want a good cross-section that
represents the community, geographically and demographically. Producing the plan will also
require that we consult with landowners and with B&NES to ensure that what we propose is
understood, legally correct, and feasible.
